All too often we communicate with other drivers only by flashing lights, sounding horns, making brief eye contact, and with short gestures. But for the most part, we remain unaware of interesting and important information from other road users.

Volkswagen of America Electronics Research Laboratory (VW-ERL) works directly with the world’s leading high-tech companies and start-ups. Collaborating closely with these partners allows the VW-ERL to design and develop innovative features and applications, which are then integrated with the Group’s vehicles for evaluation and testing.

1. Car-to-Car Information Sharing and Vehicle Probe Data
Car to CarVehicles share dynamic information such as vehicle speed, brake status, turn signal status, steering angle, location, acceleration, etc. from onboard sensors with other vehicles and the infrastructure. This represents the first step toward safety applications such as emergency brake light signalling and collision avoidance. Dynamic information sent to the infrastructure will serve as the real-time traffic monitoring system.
2. Location-Based Point-of-Interest Information
Car to CarLocal POI information is received from a nearby RSU, such as restaurants, parking, conventions, concerts, etc. Information such as pricing and parking availability can be added to the database.
3. Intersection Safety
Car to CarAn approaching vehicle receives information from a set of traffic lights, including speed limit, current light phase and time duration before the next phase. The driver
is notified accordingly if he/she is about to run a red light, representing the first step toward an intersection collision-avoidance system.
4. Travel Time and Incident Information
Car to CarThe vehicle receives relevant traffic incidents and estimated travel time based on real-time information. The data is provided by the 511 traffic system in the San Francisco Bay Area and updated on a minute-by-minute basis. The driver can adjust travel plan accordingly to avoid congested roads and to minimize driving time.
